Note: The glitch works in Version 2.0.0 of the game and earlier. If it is patched out in a future update, this post will be updated.
Kirby Star Allies’ “Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go!” mode is a unique (and strangely-named) sub-game that sees players taking on the role of a helper instead of Kirby. This means that Kirby himself is not playable in any capacity. However, at the time of writing, it actually is possible to play as Kirby through a glitch. While the bug itself is easy enough to perform, there are a few oddities that result from it that you should know about.
Accessing the Glitch
To perform this glitch, your Nintendo Switch must be in Handheld mode. Open up the Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go! title screen, and then tap the area between “New Game” and “Best Time”. In the image above, there’s a red outline around the area you need to tap. In a similar vein to Super Smash Bros. Melee’s Master Hand glitch, the game is forced to advance, and because you didn’t select a character, it defaults to Kirby.
Once you begin your run as Kirby, you’ll find that not much has changed. All of the levels are normal, and Kirby can still inhale and copy abilities just the same. But if you pause the game…
Something’s wrong here! No matter what language the game is set in, the screen will display text reading “Placeholder” in Japanese. If Kirby has inhaled and copied an ability, the “Kirby” text at the top left will change to the name of his current ability.
In case you’re wondering, any completed runs as Kirby will save the times to their own slot as if he were a separate character. There’s no worries of corrupting your save or messing up the game.
