Matchup Experience refers to a Figure Player’s saved memories against other characters. In Super Smash Bros. 4, matchup experience against top-tiers Marth, Lucina, and Bowser was considered necessary; in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, it is not as important but can still be beneficial.
Contrary to popular belief, Figure Players do not save data that corresponds to each character. Instead, FPs will learn more after battling a fighter they have not yet faced. Exposing an FP to new characters helps round out their play and prepares them against certain types of moves. Matchup experience is not fully necessary to win in tournaments, but it is recommended. Mirror matches should be played in between games to keep the FP’s style fresh. Much about matchup experience remains unknown. The chip file Figure Players use is rather small in size (it is less than one kilobyte) and the exact effects of each internal value are unknown.
