amiibo Wiki: Samus

Samus is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. 4 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The Super Smash Bros. series Samus amiibo was first released on November 21, 2014 as part of Wave 1. The Metroid series Samus amiibo can also be used as a Figure Player.

In Super Smash Bros. 4

Samus is currently ranked as a D-tier character in Super Smash Bros. 4, making her one of the worst amiibo in the game. Despite being heavily flawed and nearly outclassed by the rest of the roster, Samus does have a few redeeming qualities that help give her a fighting chance. Charge Shot, Samus’ neutral special, is perhaps her greatest asset; it is her strongest projectile and most reliable kill move. Samus also has access to Missiles and Bombs; the former can be used to camp or close a distance while the latter covers landing. Her recovery is decent, as her double jump, up special, and tether grab are usually enough to ensure a safe return. Samus’ heavyweight status also helps her stomach several powerful hits before going down.

However, Samus’ few boons are significantly outweighed by her massive weaknesses. Many of her melee attacks are plagued with short range or low speed; as a result, they are rather easy to avoid. Even her grab is nearly unusable due to its sluggish startup. She also has trouble KOing due to odd and unreliable hitbox placement on her smash attacks. Samus’ most notable flaw, however, is her terrible AI: it is one of (if not the) worst in the game. It fails to properly utilize its projectiles and tends to prioritize close combat (where the character comes up short).

As a result of these flaws, Samus has received terrible tournament representation and results. SFPT is the only trainer to have ever won competitions with Samus; unfortunately, she won a doubles and a low-tier tourney, meaning that Samus has never won a standard Smash 4 amiibo tournament.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Perhaps as a result of her low-tier placement in Smash 4 (in both competitive and amiibo play), Samus has been significantly buffed for her appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Her mobility has been noticeably increased across the board, while her forward and down smash attacks now connect more reliably. Samus can now charge Charge Shot in midair and both Homing and Super Missiles deal more damage and have higher KO potential.

Samus still suffers from many of the same flaws as her Smash 4 iteration; her smash attacks still lack reliable hitbox placement, meaning the character still has trouble landing consistent KOs. Her recovery, while decent, is fairly exploitable and is vulnerable to being gimped by opponents or their projectiles.

Thus far, Samus has accrued decent tournament results. Trainers consider her far better than she was in the previous title, though her representation is still somewhat lacking. Trainers like Blank have achieved moderate success with Samus, but her true potential has yet to be seen.
